Katherine's lessons : 1 - written notice

Are you starting home education? As with any change, are you asking yourself a number of critical questions, including what to do with the Direction de l’enseignement à la maison (DEM)? 

Don’t panic! In order to support you in this major transition period, I have prepared for you various lessons on the steps to follow and myths to unravel. You will be better equipped to embark on this adventure!

Lesson 1 : The written notice

You made up your mind? Now what? First of all, WELCOME! 

Secondly, breathe slowly. The first step is to send the written notice of homeschooling to two locations: the Direction de l’enseignement à la maison (DEM) and your jurisdiction’s School Board. To do so, read carefully the Written notice page on AQED’s website.

Important Points

• A notice must be sent for any child of compulsory school age, i.e. who has reached the age of 6 years old on July 1st of the current year or up to the age of 16 years old reached before the 1st of July of the end of the current school year.
• No notice is required for kindergarten, nor for children who turn 6 years old after July 1st, even if it’s during the summer. As a courtesy, you can simply inform the school of your decision so that it doesn’t unnecessarily keep a place for your child.
• You need to send one notice per child, not per family.
• It’s not too late! It’s the right moment now because you took your decision. You can make this decision at any time of the year. 
• There is an example and a template of a written notice on the above-mentioned web page, take inspiration from it! 

Once it’s done, you’ll be able to sleep on both ears… You’ll need it to digest what you’ve just done!
