Withdrawal during the school year

You can start homeschooling whenever you want. You can withdraw your child at any time during the school year, you don't have to wait for approval to do so.

Deadlines and documents to provide vary if you start homeschooling at the beginning of the school year or in its midst. We explain below what changes if you decide to homeschool during the school year.

Notice

You must send your written notice to the DEM and the school service centre within 10 days of withdrawing your child from school.

Learning project

The learning project must be submitted within 30 days of withdrawing your child from school. 

Status and mid-term reports

You must submit a status and a mid-term report between the 3rd and the 5th month following the implementation of your learning project, except:

• if you withdraw your child from school between January 1st and March 31st, you do not need to submit a mid-term report. You can incorporate your status report into the completion report. 
• if you withdraw your child from school after March 31st, you do not need to provide a status report or a mid-term report, only the completion report. 

Completion report

You must submit a completion report on or before June 15th. If you have withdrawn your child from school between January 1st and March 31st, you may also include your status report to your completion report.  

Children with special needs

For severely handicapped children, contact the Direction de l’enseignement à la maison (DEM) and submit to your resource person a list of all of your children’s diagnoses as soon as possible

Learning project

If your child’s special needs are preventing you from covering one of the required subjects: 

• explain the situation;
• request an exemption as per article 8 of the regulation. 

If your child can undertake a subject, but at a slower pace or by starting at a lower level than his peers:

• it is not necessary to ask for an exemption; 
• indicate the true level your child is in;
• explain his difficulties and your plan to adjust your teachings to his abilities. 

If you need services from the school service centre, don’t hesitate to add details to your learning project to explain your situation.

Status  and mid-term report

If you need services from the school service centre and are facing problems obtaining them, do not hesitate to include details explaining your situation in the status report. 

Monitoring meeting

If you need services from the school service centre and are facing problems obtaining them, do not hesitate to bring it up during the meeting with your resource person.
